Rockers reunite in Atlanta
March 14, 2005
By Jeremy Brown
It was a Rockers reunion at the Gwinnett Center in Georgia when Marty Jannetty returned to WWE to wreak havoc on La Resistance with his old partner, Shawn Michaels. “Finally, the Rockers have returned to the world!” Jannetty exulted. “After so many years of rockin’ and rollin’, struttin’ and strollin’ all over the world, it’s great to get back together with Shawn and make the best of the Rocker reunion.”
For Jannetty, the return is an especially emotional one given the differences he and the Heartbreak Kid have had in the past. “We had a very close friendship,” he said. “And when you get to be really close, there’s more of a chance that problems are going to come up. I can’t think of a friendship that hasn’t had problems, and usually they’re made stronger by them.”
Michaels echoed that sentiment, saying that tonight was a moment that some believed would never happen. “We united as friends about a year ago, which was very special,” he said. “But to have the opportunity to go back out there with him and be a tag team is very cool. I think this a huge, huge moment.”
When the two got back together in the ring, HBK noted that, despite the passing of the years, it felt like old times. “We got thrown together as a tag team in Kansas City, and we felt something special then,” he recalled. Our timing with one another was perfect, and I think Marty and I will always have that.”
But, after tonight, Jannetty has another hurdle to overcome, facing Kurt Angle at SmackDown! this coming Thursday. “That’s a tough one right there,” Jannetty admits. “You’re talking about an Olympic gold medalist, a guy that’s on top of his game. And he’s intense.”
Still, in spite of the challenge that awaits him, Jannetty feels more than up for the task. “I’m going to give him a battle he won’t forget,” he promises. “And, if nothing else, I’ll wear him down a little bit for my partner!”
The Angle situation looms large on Michaels’s mind as well. However, he says, this night is about something different altogether. “Tonight I’m having the opportunity to take my focus off of WrestleMania,” he said. “Tonight’s a real feel-good moment for us and for the fans. And then, for Marty, it’s back to business.”
