WWE Day Of Reckoning
System: GameCube
Publisher: THQ
Developer: Yukes
PCS REVIEW by Mike Marciari
WWE Day of Reckoning is a slight improvement over Wrestlemania XIX. If you played any of the Smackdown games, this game should be no problem at all for you to pick up and play. At first I thought the difficulty was ridiculous but after playing a few matches it started to grow on me. The roster is weak, no...it downright sucks. Who wants to play as the Basham Bros, Garrison Cade, or Marc Jindrak? The Create-a-wrestler mode is good but could have been better. Story mode is much improved; no more beating up security guards and construction workers. However, it gets really repetitive quickly. Some other things that I disliked include the Superstar select screen. The faces look terrible. Were they drawn by retarded monkeys or something? Then there are the collision detection issues. Why does my wrestler constantly kick and punch in the wrong direction? Finally the music, it annoys quite nicely. While not as bad as Showdown Legends Of Wrestling 3, this game still needs work.
The graphics are improved over Wrestlemania XIX. The animation is pretty smooth this time around. The blood effects are nice as well. It would have been nice if they would have gone that extra step to make it more believable though. For example, why doesn’t the blood stain the mat? If you are going to include blood, do it right.
The gameplay can be spotty at times. The reversals are nice, however the computer can really be a beast with them. Another dislike I have is that some matches take way too long. Tag matches are brutal. Your computer partner will never protect you while you attempt to pin or submit your opposition. In a Cage match it takes way too long to get out from the top. TLC matches usually end quickly and I found that table moves can be difficult to perform. This game also doesn't tell you how to tag in the manual. Pissed me the hell off frantically pushing buttons while getting my ass kicked. Lemme save you the frustration: IT’S THE Z BUTTON, THE PURPLE ONE!
If you watch wrestling you know what game modes to expect. The game includes all the popular match types used in the WWE. Added for this year’s game was the Bra and Panties match. My personal favorite is Hell in the Cell.
Once again, the roster sucks. Maybe the current state of wrestling is this bad and I just didn't realize it. Additionally, why include only a few legends. Next time don't bother. The create-a-wrestler is the only thing that saves the wrestler/roster issue from being an absolute failure.
While I have played worse wrestling games (any of the non-AKI programmed WCW games) I have certainly played much better. This game cannot compare to the greatness that is Fire Pro Wrestling D or Giant Gram both for the Dreamcast, or Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 for the N64. I had high hopes for this game but in the end it is average at best. Here's hoping Def Jam Fight For New York wont suck and one good wrestling game will hit the shelves this year.
