The much anticipated sequel (sorta, since it's actually in CG Movie format)
is tentatively scheduled to ship this fall in Japan on DVD with a US version to follow. Below are some of the news extracted from the recent premiere of its 25 mins trailer, at the Venice Film Festival.
Square Enix unveiled more information and actual footage of its forthcoming CG project, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, at the Venice International Film Festival in Italy on the 5th of September. The upcoming CG movie is set two years after the events seen at the end of Final Fantasy VII, the first PlayStation entry in Square's long-running RPG franchise. Although the Final Fantasy franchise is now up to its twelfth entry and has expanded to include online and side-story offshoots, Final Fantasy VII and its cast of characters remain some of the most beloved in the series. This devotion by fans accounts for the insane amount of interest over this CG production based on a seven-year-old game.
Prior to the screening, Tetsuya Nomura--a veteran Square developer whose work includes character designs in Final Fantasy V, VI, VIII, X, and X-2 and a directorial role for the Kingdom Hearts series--was on hand to discuss Advent Children with the assembled press. Nomura, alongside co-director Takeshi Nozue, scenario writer Kazunori Nojima, producer Shinji Hashimoto, and Square Enix president Yoichi Wada, chatted about the upcoming evening's screening. While the group offered some interesting insight into the film's development--such as the contrast in team size between Advent Children (a main team of 40) and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (over 200 people)--and mentioned that they wouldn't disappoint fans when questioned about an appearance from the ill-fated Aeris, they remained mum on hard details of the version due to be screened. Much of what follows might be considered spoiler material, so if you're trying to keep away from the plot, then you might not want to continue reading.
The story, as many of you might know, is taken place two years after the scenes of the game, Final Fantasy VII. But, many children have developed a disease, called stigma, or planet scar syndrome. It seems to be a consequence of the life energy people were exposed to.
Cloud seems to be living with some orphans. Denzel is one of the people who are suffering from geo stigma.
At the beginning, Marlene will explain what happened in Final Fantasy VII. She then prays that Denzel will not be taken away from her.
Tifa is called and given information of which she has report to Cloud. The former Terk, Reno, has been working for him at the Healing Lodge, for protection from Kadaj.
Kadaj and his “gang” are looking for the “mother”, or Jenova as we know it and later goes after the orphans Cloud has been living with.
On the way to the Healing Lodge, Cloud is attacked by Loz and Yazoo. They call him “brother” and asks him “Where is mother (Jenova)? Where have you hidden it, brother?”
Kadaj is seen speaking to the mysterious veiled man at the top of a high building. They look over the city where monsters are attacking. Possessed children then arrive and finally, Kadaj shoots a green jet into the sky, where a creature from the clouds emerges. This creature seems to resemble Bahamut or it might even be Ultima Weapon. Meanwhile, Tifa is running around the city to bring Denzel to safety.
As the chaos ensues, our friends, the old party of Final Fantasy VII reunites. Barret is seen shooting, to protect Marlene, from his arm; Red XIII attempts to attack the monster that bears a resemblance to Bahamut; Yuffie comes flying down in a parachute; Cid attacks the monsters with his lance; Vincent appears; and Tifa is seen explaining to Denzel that they are her friends.
Kadaj drives into a church on his motorcycle, while holding a metal box. He stops in the middle of a flower patch and says “Ah, Mother…” But when he looks into the box, something does not feel right, and so he screams, “Mother? Mother? MOTHER!?”
Cloud is on his motorcycle fighting against Yazoo. Reno and Rude are seen, though they are very fast scenes.
In the last scene of these clips, we see Cloud surrounded by a blue aura. Debris are everywhere and a voice is heard saying, “I will not only be a memory”. The voice belongs to Sephiroth, who still wears the same outfit, as his theme song, One-Winged Angel, plays.
