AC Milan, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester United, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Ajax, Lyon, Liverpool, Lazio, Roma (and of course Sunderland...) - just some of the teams whose Euro dreams have died before ours this season. Even more amazing is that UEFA's team coefficients for the 2003/04 season have Newcastle in 3rd place just behind Chelsea and the defeated Real Madrid or put another way, according to UEFA we're the second best team still left in Europe...! Basically, teams are awarded points on a two points for a win and one for a draw basis and then their country coefficient (England's is 3.465) is then added. Bonus points are given for Champions League qualification and for reaching the quarters, semis and final. However, the weightings don't seem to fairly reflect the difference between the Champs League and the UEFA Cup. Last season this meant that Liverpool's UEFA Cup run put them way above us in 12th with a coefficient of 20.520, while we were down in 21st (15.520) despite playing in the Champions League and progressing to the final group stages. The coefficients are used to seed teams and so are important in determining which side a team draws, especially in the early rounds. They are based on a team's five year European performance meaning that our poor showings in 2000/01 and 2001/02 still leave us in a provisional 28th for the 2004/05 season.
